FREE ONLINE GUIDE FOR PTE-A EXAM

PTE techniques and tricks

I used these techniques to score an overall 90 out of 90 in each section in the PTE-A exam.
SPEAKING
Read Aloud.
Don’t speak too loud. (Normal voice this is very important).Read for the meaning and group together the meaningful chunks. Average sound(It must not be high pitch and it must not below pitch as well. Stop at commas and full stops. (Very Important). Fall the voice towards the end of the sentence. (Very important).
Repeat Sentence.
The key here is to understand that try to speak all the words, but if you are sure that the sentence is so long, you should say at least the first few words in the correct sequence and fluently and replace the remaining gap with something else(but no um, err, repeat, ). Content is not important because if the sentence is long we most of the times will not be able to repeat correctly. So fluent and speak at least 50% words, if you missed a single word also, try to be fluent in some other words and make sure that you say 50% of the words. That is if the words length is 10 try to say at least 5 words in the first sentence and complete with fluency. Understand the meaning of the spoken words.
(Fluency is very important)...Try to be constant in your speed practice this so many times at home. Believe me, it is very easy. You can say anything from the image, but just be fluent. (Remember to say the most important point and conclusion).
Identify the graph type and say the name and same techniques. Eg The bar chart/line graph/pie chart reveals an information regarding the ….axis and ranges from .. to …. According to the graph… highest …. And lowest…./Apart from this… similar/ In conclusion, highest and lowest.
Retell lecture.
(During read aloud preparation time I wrote the below format and when I heard the lecture I filled with some few words, then, I read it for 35 seconds. That's it, so easy but be fluent).
The general topic of the lecture was ……
The speaker said…
He mentioned
She mentioned…
He talked about
He concluded/ suggested that …
Short answer.
Listen carefully to the question. (That's it, either you know the answer or not). If you need some time to think after the question, then use the format "I think the answer is ....)
READING
If your reading need improvement = read any international newspaper on their website.
Please follow the list below.
The New York Times(Look for the student subscription option for free reading for more than 20 articles a month).
ScienceDaily- Free to read.
Read aloud every day and whenever you see a new word look in the dictionary and write it down, refer to it for 2 or 3 days in a row. Firstly, you might seem it as difficult, but believe me, you will see the magic in the exam after doing this for 2 or 3 weeks.16 Questions average 32 minutes total.
Fill in the blanks (R & W)- 5 or 6 Nos.
R & W (Read for the meaning, you should read fully, not only the gap area).
In the exam if you find an answer in one gap confusing you will definitely find the answer clues in the next lines,,,this is sure ,,,,,,,,,100%.......and after replacing the word just read again at least the front and back-words together and see there is a flow or not?
Fill in the blanks - 4 or 5 Nos.
Read for the meaning and it is easy to find the answer for this.
Understand the meaning from the starting itself. Grasp the main idea in the paragraph. Most probably one of the options may be confusing with the other options. You need to understand the main idea of the text to distinguish between these confusing options.
Multiple Option Single Answer - 2 Nos.
Read the question carefully understand what it is asking for most of the times it is the opinion or main idea. Look through the options given. Read carefully, and eliminate the impossible answers, then, you know the answer, if the answer easily comes to mind please double check because they hide the answer and give a similar one.
Multiple Option Multiple Answer - 2 Nos.
Read the question carefully and understand what the question is looking for.
Read the answers and read the paragraph roughly, find keywords and match the keywords with the meaning of each option. Eliminate the wrong answers.
The answer will be exactly the paraphrase of the options. (Very important) If you are not sure of the second option then leave it for ticking the answer which is 100% true(I have done it and I got 86 in reading). Because most of the times the second option will be tempting but once you select the wrong answer you will get a negative mark in this section that will make your correct answers also unusable.
Reorder Paragraphs.
The only advice here I can give you is practice, practice, practice.
You need to find the flow of the sentences in the paragraph.
Make sure you have done a minimum of 100 Reorder practice tests before attempting the real exam. Make sure you go through the links for practice exam given at the bottom of the page.
LISTENING
Summarise Spoken Text - 2 No.
Write down keywords only. Understand the main meaning of the lecture. Follow the same technique from the retell lecture.
Particularly practice multiple answer questions. (Key here is understanding what you are looking for before the audio starts). For both the questions, the key is to understand what the question is looking for before the audio starts. Then you need to listen exactly for that answer. You should at least skim through the options to understand what the story will be about and you can almost expect what you are looking for. I will take an example if the options are all about a king and if the question is asking you to find the qualities of the king mentioned in the audio, you know you are looking for a particular quality like lovable or hard to please etc. So the key here is to understand the prompt before the audio starts.
Fill in the blanks.
Type directly(you will earn more time if you do this).
Look for the plural form of different words especially words which end with "s".
For full mark, you should be 100% correct in your spelling of each word you have entered.
Highlight correct summary.
Just read the paragraph and keep in mind what it is. Listen for meaning. If you hear any words that you have seen in the options just write down the meaning very fast. Write and understand the main point. 95% should be on listening. 2 answers will be exactly the opposite and other 2 will be so close. Eliminate the wrong answer from the options list and find the correct answer. An option with so many details will most of the times be wrong.
Select Missing Word.
The last word will be missed in the audio. Understand the meaning of lecture. It will automatically come. (look for the last word pronounced in audio). You need to understand the sentence from the starting to get the word right.
Highlight Incorrect Words.
The simplest of all questions is this type of question. An audio will be playing on the background, and you just have to follow the words in the audio with the written paragraph. If you find some words are different in the paragraph from the audio you are hearing on the background, just click on it. The word will be highlighted. There is negative marking in this section also, so choose answer wisely.
Write From Dictation.
Keep your eyes closed, take a deep breath. Be ready with your finger on the top of the keyboard. Write down without any grammar as you listen to the audio and then fix it. Don’t try to capitalize or correct spelling during the first time writing, let it be like that with errors and finally when you have time to make it correct, correct it. Important criteria, starting with a capital letter and full stop are very important.
Follow steven template which is mentioned below.
Follow e2language.
Both of the above techniques are good.

A general format.
General words relating to the topic + paraphrasing of the question + your opinion(agree/disagree).
Topic sentence. + supporting point + example+ additional supporting point(Moreover/ Additionally/ In addition) + Conclude the sentence( This should confirm the topic sentence by somehow).
Same format in the 3rd paragraph, with supporting or against a point(This should be another supporting point against the question if you are supporting or if you are against then take the first word as However,..........). If you are supporting please say the same conclusion in the above sentence in different words. Or else, you should say as the conclusion that this point is irrelevant/invalid because it will have a negative impact on a society.
In conclusion, while people may vary in their opinion, I agree/disagree(my opinion is that).

Read the newspaper every day. One hour. Before sleep no need to watch youtube just read the newspaper. (I used The New York Times all day from one month, this really contributed to my score).
I am again telling you I have seen questions from this website in the previous exam. Practice tests
And this website is totally free to use...
Writing essay- follow steven template blindly, just modify as per the questions, 4 types are there(agree or disagree/opinion/problem solution/advantage and disadvantage). Each type template is different.
Summarise Written Text.
This is just read the text what comes to your mind as the total meaning of each para write down and mix these sentences and make a sentence of maximum 40 words, don't go beyond 40,,,,, the max minimum is 20 words. You will make it. I got 90 with such an approach.
A general advice for writing _ use Grammarly, and try to see the mistakes and clarify it(This is very important)
For spelling problems see the website Spelling study and study.
Once again thanks for all and wish you all the best of luck. One advice for all aspirants, don't give up. Keep in mind that This is ______ and I can do it. (replace it with your name and can do wonders)

  12. Hi your article is great. I have same experience where I passed Civil Service exam here in my country. I scored 92%. How? Same of what you did. I read lots of English articles from many useful websites and books whenever there is a new word for me. I look at my Webster dictionary to get the meaning of it and I use it most of the time to be familiar of its usage. Kudos to your success.

  16. I have recently taken my exam and passed! Your guide was a helpful tool. What I found to be most useful is exposure to content I may not have come across in my own studying and being able to take a comparable exam for 4 hours. By reading this guide it allowed me to get a general idea of what the exam would be like. I also became very familiar with guidelines, which I feel helped me on my test. I also really liked how you gave explanations not only for what to do, but for what not to do.
